Lantinea – Live

Documenting as Resistance – Live
Hosted by Los Herederos co-founder Naomi Sturm, Documenting as Resistance is a talk-based radio program exploring everyday people and their connection to neighborhood culture. A natural outgrowth of the organization wide community archiving initiative by the same name, Documenting as Resistance activates materials and discussions from the organization’s work in Diversity Plaza and Jackson Heights over the past several years. Today, we are returning to three past episodes:
1PM, LGBT Network: Listen to a conversation with members of the LGBT Network, a local non-profit organization serving LGBT people, their families, and support systems in Long Island and Queens. The LGBT Network is a leader in creating and implementing solutions to address many of the greatest challenges that LGBT people face today – bullying in our schools, discrimination and harassment, lack of community and socialization, disproportionate burden of HIV, unsafe workplaces, lack of housing and service options for LGBT older adults, and a lack of LGBT-affirming and welcoming community services. Moreover they do this work bilingually in a quest to serve Queens’ diverse Latinx LGBT populations.
3PM, Andrew Silverstein: In this episode of Documenting As Resistance, we sit down with Andrew Silverstein, long-time Queens resident and founder of Streetwise New York Tours. For over ten years, he has led walking tours of Jackson Heights with university groups, high school classes, and community organizations. Also a journalist, his writing, which often explores topics of immigration, has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The City and Forward.
4:30PM, Nuevo Queens Pride Initiative: Learn about the efforts of the LGBT Network’s Nuevo Queens Pride initiative, the story of one of Diversity Plaza’s longeset standing brick and mortar businesses, 4 Seasons Uniforms, owned and operated by Mr. John Park, and the personal trajectory of life-long neighborhood resident and sociologist, Dr. Soniya Munshii.
