Mapping the Roots of Salsa music in NYC

Salsa Sound Map of New York City #1

Inspired by the deep history of salsa in New York City, Sursystem Magazine created a map highlighting the genre’s origins, evolution, and key landmarks across the city. Originally featured as a centerfold in Sursystem Magazine 08, the map is now coming to life on the airwaves in a three-part live radio series, debuting its first episode today. Hosted by Marcelo Arroyave and Adrian Patiño, the series guides listeners through 23 key points on the map, each representing a neighborhood, venue, character, or landmark that shaped the story of salsa in NYC. At each point, listen to a track that not only contextualizes the discussion, but immerses the audience in the soundscape of salsa’s evolution. In today’s episode, learn more about the project and its creators, and begin the tour through New York City salsa.
