DAR / Streetwise New York Tours
On this episode of Documenting As Resistance, we sit down with Andrew Silverstein, long-time Queens resident and founder of Streetwise New York Tours. For over ten years, he has led walking tours of Jackson Heights with university groups, high school classes, and community organizations. Also a journalist, his writing, which often explores topics of immigration, has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The City and Forward. A natural outgrowth of the organization wide community archiving initiative by the same name, Documenting as Resistance activates materials and discussions from the organization’s work in Diversity Plaza and Jackson Heights over the past several years. As our old school ode to talk-based radio, exploring everyday people and their connection to neighborhood culture, we look forward to this conversation about ‘touring’ our communities and the impacts of this kind of industry on local development.
